"DOG PLACE"

Hundested is a port city  in North Zealand with 8,660 inhabitants, located on the peninsula Halsnæs in Torup Parish. The city belongs to Halsnæs Municipality and is located in the Capital Region.

Hundested was originally a very large rocky reef stretching from Spodsbjerg, Halsnæs and far out to sea in a northwesterly direction. A very large number of seals (dogs) lived and bred here. Hundested is believed to originate from the reef, which was home to the seal dog, hence "Dog-place", ind Danish "Hunde-sted". Today the seals have moved to Hesselø.

In the early 1800s, the fishermen from Lynæs began landing their ships on the beach off the reef. During the 1830s, many of the fishermen built dwelling houses on the site. As the ships got bigger, the port had to be expanded. Originally, the harbor consisted of some rice paddies that went out into the water.

Over time, the Port of Hundested has developed into a modern traffic port with a fishing port, ferry port, freight port, container port and marina - and managed to maintain the authentic raw atmosphere.
